About

Why Wilhelm?
There's a now somewhat famous sound effect recorded by actor and singer Sheb Wooley the 1951 film Distant Drums. The scene in particular can be seen here:

As part of Warner Bros stock sound library it was used in a number of other films shortly afterwards. However the name was not coined until 1953's The Charge at Feather Ridge. The scream was used for the death of a number of characters, including that of Private Wilhelm, who was shot by an arrow.

Since this time it's been used in well over 200 films including the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones franchises as well as most of Quentin Tarantino's work to name but a few. As a result of it's recognisable nature and repeated use but sound editors it attained and continues to build something of a cult status.

There are a number of compilation videos of the scream in use on YouTube as well as further reading on Wikipedia

Why Review?
This blog is simply to chart my progression through the wealth of films I have to watch. I used to review films in the cinema when I was at university for a small community but stopped once it came round to the final year. I enjoyed it and it meant I actually watched a lot more films than I did previously. I wouldn't say I was particularly good or that people agreed with me all the time, but it was fun.

For the most part this blog prevents me putting a film on and letting it run through while I do something totally unrelated. If I end up walking away from the screen and getting distracted then I haven't really watched it properly and will more than likely still think "oh I've seen that already" when scrolling through the list.

My aim this year (2014) is to try watch at least a couple of films a week, be that streamed or in the cinema and catch up on so many that I've missed or just plain ignored. I know there are many to get through, not to mention quite a few TV series I haven't even started yet, and a lot of films I just want to watch again for the sake of it and that it wont be something i'll complete this or even next year (unless I suddenly win a lot of money and don't have to work on anything else anymore).

If you agree, awesome. If you go and watch something because I've enjoyed it, even better. If not, then at least I still got to watch it and that's better than nothing.

I think at some point i'll probably review some things i've seen, but the balance wont go in favour of them, rather than unseen films, at least for a while judging by the number I still have to watch.
